Smart cash machines developed more quickly for market readiness

Time-to-market brought forward in complex development project

Diebold Nixdorf is constantly developing new systems in order to offer its customers state-of-the-art, self-service technology with advanced user interfaces and functions.
Time-to-market is particularly important in the highly competitive banking environment. With the help of external consultants, the time period for an extensive development project could be shortened by almost 4 months.

ATMs are durable and, thanks to 24-hour availability, also very convenient. Due to the variety of functions and innovative user interfaces, they have also been very successful so far. In this digital age, that could soon change. Many banks are currently downsizing their branch network; service desks are increasingly being replaced by self-service at the machines – therefore their range of functions needs to be expanded. „Customers are used to mobile applications and modern user interfaces, they expect touchpad and swipe technologies, i.e. fast interactive transactions also at the cash machine. Providers are going to have to adjust“ says Uwe Krause, Head of Strategy and Portfolio Management of the Systems Business Unit at Diebold Nixdorf. The company, which emerged in 2016 from the merger of the U.S.-based Diebold Group with the German Wincor Nixdorf, is one of the leading providers of IT solutions for retail banks and companies. Also keeping in step with the expansion of the software business is the constant enhancement of the self-service systems. For this purpose, development resources specializing in banking from both Germany and the USA were pooled together in a new project. It was a considerable technical challenge, because even the basic function – cash dispensing – requires a sophisticated hardware and software system coupled with complicated mechatronics. Add to this the integration of the latest technologies and security functions, e.g. the latest defense against cyber-attacks. These systems, which are increasingly being installed in public spaces, not only have to be very secure, but also easily accessible to people with disabilities.

Since every month counts in the highly competitive world of banking, existing development processes should be significantly reduced and thus the time-to-market shortened. After some attempts to streamline the processes, it became clear that this task could not be accomplished with internal resources alone, in addition to normal day-to-day business. The comprehensive plan of the numerous sub-projects was too complex, linking so many parallel activities such as purchasing, procurement, certification and quality management, conversion of production lines, marketing and sales, and service training.

Therefore, it was decided to work together with an external consulting company, CYLAD Consulting GmbH. „With their focus on technology-intensive industries and their methods of reducing the complexity of large-scale projects, the consultancy corresponded exactly with our requirement profile,“ says Jochen Linck, Head of Global Hardware Development at Diebold Nixdorf.

Finding the shortest way

To address the target of saving time in key processes, the consultants first developed the critical path – the sequence of activities that cannot run in parallel and whose shortening has an impact on the final deadline. Optimizing the critical path was a complex undertaking in such a large project. Within two months, the consultants had engaged in intensive discussions with the departments and scrutinized every single interdependency. „In processes that have been going on for years, the objective approach of a competent external partner is very helpful,“ says Uwe Krause. Dr. Jochen Linck adds, „It really was a lot of work to map out all the interdependencies; we could not have done that internally because of time constraints.“

The second step was to shorten the critical path. „Quality always has to be ensured. It is not about squeezing more and more out of the organization – on the contrary, more time is needed for important tasks, and therefore they are started earlier,“ explains Dr. Thomas Trautmann, Managing Partner at CYLAD Consulting. The content and technical outcomes of a process are dealt with separately. For example new product types must always be tested for safety and certified. Several weeks may elapse between the notification of the test results and the creation of the physical certificates. Previously, receipt of the documents was awaited and only after that did the project commence. The new schedule: Of course, no product goes on sale unless the necessary documents are available, however after passing the safety tests, the technical tests in the customer environment can commence.

Over 20 ideas for a quicker market launch

„As consultants, we can provide an objective perspective plus problem-solving skills from other industries and projects, though experience has shown that a lot of good ideas are generated in the companies themselves. We then assist with the structured preparation, assessment, and planning,“ says Trautmann. In the case of Diebold Nixdorf, the team of consultants organized a focused decision-making week. Project participants from all relevant departments and locations (colleagues from the USA had come to Germany) initially discussed the individual ideas in mixed teams and made their selections. The heads of manufacturing, development, quality control, purchasing and product management came together daily and the staff presented their ideas and assessments to the jury in a short, five-minute pitch. After that it was directly decided which ideas should be pursued. As a result, a good 20 individual measures were recommended for implementation. In total, the combined measures shortened the project duration by about 4 months.

Some of the participants blocked their calendars for the whole period of the workshop a bit in disbelief. However, the unanimous opinion at the end was: „We have never gotten so much done before in one week.“

The implementation makes a difference

It is understood that inspiring workshops and valuable ideas permeate into daily business practice. The work of CYLAD Consulting therefore did not end at this point, but went into the next phase: implementation. The new measures had to be arranged in detail and integrated into the overall planning. For each measure, a responsible person, an owner, was nominated. The consultants then discussed the individual steps for implementation with each of these owners. Since many of the new measures influenced each other, the adaptation of the schedule was an iterative process.

Diebold Nixdorf appreciates this thorough, structured approach. „By putting all the procedures into a roadmap, CYLAD’s consultants helped us better manage and analyze the planning and processes,“ said Krause. Dr. Jochen Linck also sees the cooperation with CYLAD Consulting as a success: „The consultants have developed a deep understanding of our processes and generated crucial ideas from them. Internally, they were consistently held in high regard as consultants and reliable partners, especially because of their great commitment to the project’s success.“

Best Sound Quality: Asahi Kasei Microdevices to Present Premium Audio Solutions at HIGH END 2019 in Munich

Düsseldorf, April 11, 2019 – From 9 to 12 May 2019, Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation, (AKM), will exhibit for the first time at Europe’s leading specialist trade fair for high-quality consumer electronics – „HIGH END“ – in Munich, Germany. One of the highlights will be the latest audio D/A Converter (DAC) flagship AK4499, which was launched in December 2018, featuring the world’s lowest THD+N value (Total Harmonic Distortion plus Noise). Visitors are invited to actively convince themselves of the premium audio quality of the products at the booth.

Founded in 1931 as a subsidiary of the Japanese technology group Asahi Kasei, AKM is increasingly strengthening its marketing activities on the European market and is this year for the first time presenting itself at HIGH END. As the highlight of this year’s presentation, the one-stop provider of LSIs (Large Scale Integration) for high-resolution audio systems will showcase the VERITA AK4499, the new flagship D/A converter from the „VELVET SOUND“ family.

With a value of -124 dB, the newcomer to the product range offers the world’s highest class of low THD+N. At the same time, it provides the world’s highest signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), with up to 140 dB. A specially developed IC (Integrated Circuit) manufacturing process ensures the best sound quality. It furthermore features a current output architecture – the first among products from AKM. This allows manufacturers of audio devices to simply integrate the AK4499 to their systems.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to test the AK4431 stereo and AK4332 HiFi D/A converters for bluetooth headphones, ensuring a high-quality sound with low power consumption.

Greater safety and reliability for sensitive electronics
Modern electronics are used nowadays in a range of industries, which expose them to a wide range of temperatures. Most notably, electronic assemblies in safety-related areas of application, such as medical technology, the automotive industry (autonomous driving) and aerospace technology, must function 100% reliably at all temperature conditions.
Safe testing and measuring methods are thus becoming increasingly more relevant and have become standard today, in order to analyse the resistance of electronic components and increase their durability. Rehm offers two systems for such fields of application: The Securo Plus and the Securo Minus. By specifically heating up and/or cooling down the assembly, these systems ensure that they have the ideal temperature for the corresponding test and inspection procedures.
„A functional test under realistic conditions offers the maximum possible safety for our customers,“ says Peter Schiele, Product Sales Rehm Thermal Systems. The Securo systems cover a temperature range of -50 °C with the Securo Minus and+120 °C with the Securo Plus.
To effectively cool down or heat up electronic components, air or nitrogen in the process chamber plays a key role: In the Securo Minus, the air is drawn in through a ventilator and blown to a heat exchanger driven by a refrigeration unit. Cooled in the heat exchanger, the air is then guided back to the process chamber. To allow it to circulate there ideally, and also to ensure it reaches all the assemblies in the process chamber, it is blown by a ventilator. In the process, guide plates guide it so precisely through the process chamber that an even distribution of temperature is guaranteed.
In the Securo Plus, in place of the heat exchanger, heating coils warm the air. Heating spirals in the process chamber also help to reach the desired heating gradient as quickly as possible.
In designing and implementing the required test tasks, however, Rehm Securo systems offer more than just flexibility and safety with regard to the temperature. To be able to fit perfectly into the different production landscapes, Rehm offers various integration concepts. „The Securo systems can be integrated into any production environment as an inline variant and as a batch system. Great importance is also attached to making provision for sufficient reception capacity. In this way, the temperature of large parts is also reliably controlled in short cycles at the required testing temperature,“ explains Peter Schiele.
The Securo is of interest thanks in part to the goods carrier circulation according to the „meander“ principle: The goods carriers are loaded with the assemblies to be tested and move through the process chamber in close succession in arch-shaped loops. „This helps us make ideal use of the space available, which ensures maximum throughput. As a standard feature, the Securo has 30 of these goods carriers and five loading and unloading flaps. A total of 150 components can thus be loaded. Other test systems on the market have a drum inside which the components are moved. That is much less effective,“ Peter Schiele confirms. If retrofitting is to be done to other forms of assemblies and geometries, the Securo offers the solution for this. A changeable carrier system makes this easily possible.

Through this individually adjustable number of loading openings (bulkheads) of the Securo systems, the entire width of the system is utilised, which allows the throughput to be increased. Loading can be done both manually and automatically. To prevent ingress of ambient air and, in the case of the Securo Minus, possible icing in the loading area, the opening times coordinated with the handling system are set as short as possible. „Furthermore, during the entire process there is a slight overpressure in the chamber, which also reduces ingress of ambient air,“ Peter Schiele explains.

The Securo systems offer maximum capacity utilisation and flexibility in the integration in production environments, and for medium-sized series the loading and unloading can also be done manually or, for large-scale series, by robot. Rehm systems that have been developed and designed based on decades of experience in thermal systems can thus now also be used in testing and inspection tasks.

Düsseldorf, November 05, 2018 – The Japanese technology company Asahi Kasei will present its technologies and solutions in the areas of sensor technology and premium audio at this year’s electronica, the renowned electronics trade fair in Munich. For the first time at a European trade fair, the electric concept vehicle „AKXY“ will also be present at the booth.

Asahi Kasei presents 36 innovative materials and solutions for the mobility of the future with its specially designed „rolling competence center“ AKXY. Thereby, the cross-divisional innovation approach of the company, which combines the business areas electronics, synthetic rubber, high-performance plastics and textiles, becomes evident. The second highlight at the fair is a „Premium Audio Lounge“, where visitors can experience Asahi Kasei’s premium audio solutions live on site.

Safety drives with you: Sensors for safe and comfortable driving
A special focus of the electronic components in the AKXY is on solutions that make driving safer and more comfortable. For example, the progressive CO2 sensor solution „Sensor Sunrise“, which ensures more concentrated and safer driving. It measures the carbon dioxide content in the car cabin and contributes to better air quality. Senseair Sunrise is produced by the Swedish subsidiary Senseair and is the world’s first optical solid-state NDIR sensor for measuring gases such as carbon dioxide. With an unsurpassed low power consumption – six times lower than that of comparable NDIR sensors – it can easily be integrated into battery-powered systems.

Undisturbed conversations in the car
Driving fast or the playing of music can considerably impair the conversation between driver and passengers. The consequences are inattentive driving and an increased risk for all road users. Asahi Kasei has developed a special solution for this: The digital signal processor (DSP) – as an in-car communication application – ensures safe and comfortable conversations in the car without the driver having to turn his head. With its Engine Sound Creator application, the DSP contributes to an improved driving experience and increased road safety by providing a realistic engine sound.

Solutions for autonomous driving
Intelligent driver assistance systems are experiencing tremendous market growth, with radar sensors playing an important role in the overall system architecture due to their unique capabilities. With the Transceiver IC, Asahi Kasei offers a standard component that increases the performance and precision of the radar sensor in object localization and contributes to improved discrimination accuracy between people and vehicles.

„Sensor island“ and „Premium Audio Lounge“
Asahi Kasei will be exhibiting its concept car in Hall B4 – Booth 516. Additionally, the company will show further sensor solutions on its „sensor island“. A highlight in addition to CO2 and 3D sensors is a newly developed presence sensor, which has very low energy consumption and does not require a lens at all. Further sensor solutions will be presented by Senseair in Hall B3 – Booth 441.

ZETTLER´s AZSR131 Relay

Munich, Germany, 27th of September, 2018 – Focusing on solar, e-mobility and multiple other applications, ZETTLER Group will showcase various new relays at this year´s November electronica show in Munich, Germany (Hall A6 / Booth 118).

The new AZEV116 and AZEV132 series are next-generation IEC mode 2 Electric Vehicle (EV) charging relays in development for release in 2019. These relays are designed to survive high momentary currents that may occur on short circuits, thus ensuring outstanding reliability without contact welding. The AZEV116/132 series will also feature a potential monitoring contact, as required by IEC62752:2016, making these types of relays ideally suited for EV and other applications demanding high security and safety demands.

The newly developed AZSR1160 is a 160 A extreme high-power PCB solar relay, designed for PV applications of up to 36,8 kVA (single phase 230 VAC) / 111 kVA (three phase 400 VAC) – a highly attractive, small footprint substitute for conventional contactors. This relay is suitable for large commercial / rooftop-based PV systems and commercial solar fields.

AZSR190 is a 90 A high-power PCB relay for solar inverters. Developed for PV applications of up to 23 kVA (single phase 230 VAC) / 69 kVA (three phase 400 VAC) this relay is well suited for medium sized to larger roof top-based / commercial systems.

AZSR165 is a 65 A economy version of the new AZSR190 series. Developed for PV applications of up to 18,4 kVA (single phase 230 VAC) / 55 kVA (three phase 400 VAC) this relay is well suited for medium sized to larger roof top-based / commercial systems. ZETTLER recently also adapted this relay for a DC-side solar battery storage application, supporting a major industry player in clean home-energy solutions.

ZETTLER´s AZSR131 was initially designed as a solar relay for residential and small roof top-based PV systems of up to 8 kVA (single phase 230 VAC) / 24 kVA (three phase 400 VAC). While not a new relay, ZETTLER continues to find new application extensions for this relay beyond just PV solar inverters. AZSR131 is suitable for diverse applications such as heat-pump solutions and Electro Vehicle wall box charging units and is, therefore, rapidly becoming a multi-purpose relay.

AZDC6 is a 600VDC miniature relay for RSS (Rapid Shutting Down System) for Solar installations, scheduled for 2019 release. The compact size allows for a thinner design of certain RSS boxes that are deployed as part of compliance with 2017 NEC 690.12.
