Cutting Stainless-Steel Pipes for Home Use

Stainless-steel pipes are one of the most ubiquitous fittings in American hopes. Stainless steel piping can be used for a variety of purposes including plumbing, gas connections etc. Every year, more than half a million fresh homes in America opt for stainless steel pipes.

In order to use stainless steel pipes however, it is often necessary to cut them into the correct shapes and sizes. Fortunately, it is possible to perform these tasks at home provided you have the right tools.

Cutting Stainless-Steel Pipes with an Abrasive Cutoff Saw

One of the main methods of cutting stainless steel pipes is to use an abrasive cutoff saw. To begin the process, mark the place where the cut needs to be made with a permanent marker. This helps reduce the chance of mistakes being made during the cutting process.

Next, place the piece of piping to be cut in the vise of the saw. Carefully line up the mark you made using the permanent marker with the blade of the cutoff saw. Now slowly tighten the vise until the pipe piece is gripped securely between the jaws of the vise.

Start the abrasive cutoff saw motor by pressing the start button. Now move the saw slowly into the pipe allowing the blade to gently glide into the pipe.  Take special care not to force the blade into the stainless-steel pipes in any way since this can cause the blade to get damaged.

Now wait for some time before remove the cut piece from the vise. This is because the friction caused by the saw blade would have caused the metal pipe tube to heavy up. However, if your need is urgent, you can always remove the pipe immediately. Just remember to take special care to avoid getting burnt by wearing thick work gloves. Last but not the least; you will need to clean out any of the debris from the cutting process that might be clinging to the sides of the pipe. Use a round file to clear the interior of the stainless steel pipes and a flat file to remove any remains that might be still clinging on to the outside of the pipes.

To conclude, stainless-steel pipes (German word: edelstahlrohre) are essential components of a home. These versatile fittings come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses. In addition to cutting your stainless steel pipes with an abrasive cutoff saw, you can also use a tubing cutter to achieve the same results.

  • Stainless Steel Tubing for General Corrosion-Resistance: This general category of steel is appropriate for applications that require corrosion resistance above other traits. Ferritic or martensitic types of steel (those made with the most chromium) are manufactured to be either heat-treated or annealed. Austenitic Stainless steels (those with high chromium and nickel contents) offer even more resistance, and can be used under the same general conditions as ferritic and martensitic types.
  • Stainless Steel Pressure Pipe: This type of stainless steel pipe is made from either solid chromium or a chromium and nickel combination. Types of stainless steel pressure pipe include seamless and welded pipe, electric fusion welded pipe for high-pressure applications, large diameter welded pipe for corrosive or high-temperature applications, and seamless and welded ferritic and austenitic stainless steel pipe.
  • Stainless Steel Sanitary Tubing: For applications where stainless steel tubing or piping must come into contact with food and other sensitive products, sanitation is a high priority. Stainless steel sanitary tubing is used in such applications because it has high corrosion-resistance, doesn’t tarnish, and is easy to keep clean.
