Bubble tea is a Taiwanese-based drink, which was first created in the early 1980s. This drink constitutes a tea base with a mixture of fruit or milk, with fruit jelly and chewy tapioca balls called bubbles, pearls, or boba added to the mixture. Bubble tea is generally blended in ice, and mixed with fruit or syrup, thus providing it with a slushy consistency.
Over the recent past, bubble tea has gained widespread popularity across North America, Europe and Germany, particularly gaining traction among the youth. Several food and beverage outlets such as McDonald’s are selling the dessert beverage as part of their menu. This in turn, is expected to increase growth of the bubble tea market, globally.
Rapid urbanization and increasing demand for ready-to-drink beverages are boosting demand for bubble tea. Moreover, its cost-effectiveness and availability in varied flavors such as peach, plum, and coffee are contributing to growth of the global bubble tea market.

Most recipes of bubble tea contain half cup of cooked tapioca pearls, one-fourth cup of sugar and one-eighth cup of sweetened condensed milk per serving. The high content of sugar used in the production of bubble tea, makes it an unhealthy option of beverage. This poses as a restraint for growth of the bubble tea market. According to the American Heart Association, the recommended limit of added sugar per day is six teaspoons for women and nine teaspoons for men. Furthermore, tapioca pearls present in the drink contain carbohydrates from starch, thus accounting for low nutritional value. A cup of these pearls contains 540 calories, while adding one-fourth a cup of them to milk tea results in an increase of 135 calories to the total calorie intake of the tea. According to research conducted by University Hospital Aachen, Germany, traces of the carcinogenic chemical were found in tapioca ball samples. On the contrary, however, manufacturers of bubble tea claim that the tea is not harmful and instead has anti-oxidant properties. Further research is thus, required to establish a clear view regarding the health effects of bubble tea.
